The Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) will launch a free mediation program on May 18, 2026, for commercial disputes involving claims of RM250,000 or less. The program covers 26 categories of commercial disputes, including services, supply, sales and purchases, trade and marketing, property, companies and partnerships, e-commerce, and the digital economy sectors [1, 2, 3].
Disputants can submit their claims directly to AIAC or through an online platform, making the process more accessible to the public [1, 2, 3]. A total of 170 local and international mediators have pledged to handle cases pro bono under this initiative, providing volunteer support as part of the program [1, 2, 3].
The program aims to assist small and medium enterprises (SMEs), entrepreneurs, players in the creative industry, and members of the public who face smaller-scale commercial disputes [1, 2, 3]. It aligns with the Malaysian government's vision for the Madani Mediation Centre, which seeks to improve access to justice through mediation and judicial system reforms.
Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the cabinet was briefed on the national aspiration behind establishing the Madani Mediation Centre on May 13. She noted it “supports efforts to expand public access to the justice system through mediation” and will strengthen mediation services in a targeted and holistic manner, including improving mediator competency [2].
The AIAC program will officially launch on May 18, providing free mediation services to streamline dispute resolution for smaller commercial claims and reduce the burden on courts [1, 2, 3].
