Ruben Amorim, the former Manchester United manager, has agreed to a two-year contract to become AC Milan's next head coach, succeeding Massimiliano Allegri who was dismissed last month after Milan finished fifth in Serie A and missed Champions League qualification [1, 2, 3, 4].

Amorim, 41, was sacked by Manchester United in January 2026 after 14 difficult months in charge, during which the club finished 15th in the Premier League and lost a Europa League final [5, 1, 2, 3, 6]. He replaced Erik ten Hag at United in November 2024 but departed amid struggles on and off the pitch [1, 4, 6].

If he takes the Milan job, Amorim will forgo the remainder of his salary owed by Manchester United, potentially saving the club up to £15.9 million in compensation for him and his coaching staff [1, 2, 3].

Amorim previously found success as Sporting CP’s head coach, leading the club to end a 19-year league title drought in 2020-21 and winning the championship again in 2023-24 [1, 3, 4]. Despite initial reports linking Amorim to Benfica, the position there was filled by Marco Silva [5, 1, 3].

AC Milan will see a major restructuring, with the departure of Allegri as well as sporting director Igli Tare, chief executive Giorgio Furlani, and technical director Geoffrey Moncada [2, 4]. Nottingham Forest’s head of recruitment Pedro Ferreira is reportedly targeted to join Amorim’s staff as part of the club’s rebuilding efforts [2].

Amorim is expected to make his debut as Milan coach in a pre-season match against Celtic on July 25, 2026 [1, 3]. AC Milan and Manchester United will meet in a pre-season friendly on August 15, 2026, in Wroclaw, Poland—a matchup that will pit Amorim against his former club for the first time [5, 1, 3, 6].

Manchester United has also announced a new season of the Amazon "All or Nothing" documentary, which will follow the club’s activities from pre-season onwards. Toby Craig, United's chief communications officer, said, "Now is the right time to open our doors, so that for the first time our fans around the world can see behind the scenes of a club which means so much to so many people" [2].
