A Russian warship, the Admiral Grigorovich, fired warning shots near the UK-registered yacht Bright Future around 11:40 a.m. BST on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. The yacht was approximately 20 nautical miles south of the Isle of Wight in the English Channel, outside UK territorial waters [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].

According to the Russian Defence Ministry, the frigate fired to prevent a collision after the yacht was allegedly on a "dangerous course." The Russian warship made multiple attempts to contact the yacht, including radio warnings and signal flares, before resorting to small arms fire [6, 3, 5, 7]. The shots were fired at a distance of about 500 yards (457–460 meters) from the yacht [1, 2, 4, 5].

The crew of Bright Future disputed the Russian claims. Jane Kelvey, a crew member, said the yacht was following a normal and safe course, deliberately maneuvering to show they had seen the warship. She said, "We just don’t want it blown out of all proportion. We don’t want world war three to start because of this ... We were in no danger. We were not about to collide with them" [6, 8, 9]. Kelvey described the only surprising part as the gunfire itself, after the warship gave horn blasts[r2].

No injuries or damage were reported to the 40-foot (12 meters) yacht, which continued its journey [1, 2, 4, 7]. The British Ministry of Defence called the event an "isolated incident" with no connection to recent UK operations against a Russian shadow fleet oil tanker intercepted two days earlier in the Channel [1, 2, 10, 7]. Royal Navy vessels HMS Mersey and HMS Tyne were shadowing the Admiral Grigorovich at the time and had tracked it off the coast of France the day before [1, 11, 4, 5].

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the warning shots as "reckless" and "deeply concerning," saying, "The couple on the yacht must've been terrified." He added, "We’re living in a more volatile and dangerous world than we have at any time in our lifetimes" [10, 3, 7]. Defence officials assessed the Russian ship was drifting when it fired shots to avoid a collision. However, the yacht crew said the frigate appeared maneuverable [10, 3, 8, 7].

The Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich is 409 feet (125 meters) long and has been operating in the English Channel for some time [8]. The yacht Bright Future is about 40 feet (12 meters) in length [3, 8].

Prime Minister Starmer publicly criticized the incident on June 17 during the G7 summit in France [10, 3, 7]. The British Ministry of Defence continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the warning shots fired by the Russian warship.
