Jean-Luc Mélenchon confirmed on May 3 that he will run in France’s 2027 presidential election, setting up his fourth bid for the top job. [1] The 74-year-old leader of La France Insoumise announced the campaign in an interview with TF1. [1]

Mélenchon has already run for president three times, in 2012, 2017 and 2022. [1] He is a former Socialist Party minister and senator. [1]

He said he was running again because of what he described as urgent threats. "We are threatened by a widespread war, we are threatened by a spectacular change in the climate, and now we have an economic and social crisis approaching," Mélenchon said. [1] He has positioned his platform as a radical left alternative to the far-right National Rally, which is expected to be a major force in the race. [1]

The 2027 contest is likely to feature a crowded left-wing field, which could split the vote. [1] Mélenchon also remains one of France’s most polarizing politicians. Polls at the end of 2025 showed high levels of voter antipathy toward him, and the Socialist Party accused him in early 2026 of making antisemitic comments. [1]

The campaign will now unfold ahead of the 2027 election, with Mélenchon once again seeking to rally left-wing voters behind his candidacy. [1]
