Colombia hosted the first reported conference on “transitioning away from fossil fuels” in Santa Marta on the Caribbean coast, as the government sought to push the economy and other countries away from coal, gas and oil dependence. [1]

The host said nearly 60 countries joined the talks, which opened on Wednesday evening. [1]

Irene Vélez Torres, Colombia’s environment minister and chair of the conference, said the meeting marked “the beginning of a new global climate democracy” and described it as a “new method” for tackling the issue. [1]

The report says the gathering was presented as part of a wider push to weaken the grip of fossil-fuel exporters on the world’s future. [1]

The Guardian published the report on 2026-05-01, while the conference was opened in Santa Marta on Wednesday evening. [1]
