The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now listed for digital release on 19 May, after an earlier expected date of 5 May, according to When to Stream's updated schedule. Universal and Nintendo have not officially confirmed the date. [1, 2]
The film will be sold digitally for $24.99 on Apple TV, Prime Video, YouTube Movies & TV and Fandango at Home, the update said. [2]
The release comes after a mixed critical response. Eurogamer critic Christian Donlan gave the film 2/5 stars and wrote that it had "very little at stake" for most of its running time. He also said there was not enough space for anything memorable to develop. [1, 2]
Nintendo chief Shigeru Miyamoto said he was surprised by the negative reaction. He said he had expected the film to be judged less harshly than the previous one, but that it received even harsher reviews. [2]
Despite the criticism, the film has been a commercial hit and has become the most successful film of 2026 so far. Nintendo also added a new Epilogue chapter to Rosalina's storybook to mark the new movie release. [1, 2]
The next scheduled milestone is the updated digital release date on 19 May, pending any official confirmation from Universal or Nintendo. [1, 2]
