Unknown Worlds said Subnautica 2 has used no generative AI at any stage of development, with AI for creatures and other systems built through traditional hand-coded work in Unity Blackboard. [1]
Scott MacDonald said the game was made with “traditional person-done” methods, not generative tools. He said Krafton gave the team access to AI tools but did not require their use. [1]
The comments put Subnautica 2 at odds with Krafton’s broader corporate push. Krafton said in October 2025 that it would become an “AI-first company” and place AI at the center of productivity and value creation. [1]
Even so, the Subnautica 2 team decided the tools did not fit its project or pipeline and chose not to adopt them. Anthony Gallegos said Krafton understood a mandate could disrupt the studio’s process and be harmful to development. [1]
Krafton has taken a cautious line on forced use of generative AI, saying it wants to avoid breaking game development workflows. Another Krafton game, Project Windless, also did not use generative AI for narrative or content creation when it was announced at Sony’s State of Play in February 2026. [1]
