PC Gamer’s MMO column “Terminally Online” said on Tuesday that the genre feels bleak because there are few new MMOs on the horizon, even though players still have plenty of good games to choose from now. [1]

The author said recent reports had left them downbeat about the state of online role-playing games. “Maybe it's my allergies acting up, or a remnant of winter blues, or the fact everything feels just a little bit dire in the world at the moment, but I'm kinda bummed out about the state of MMOs, man,” the column said. [1]

The piece argued that the real problem is not a lack of quality games. It pointed to World of Warcraft, The Elder Scrolls Online, Final Fantasy 14, Guild Wars 2, Warframe, Fallout 76, Classic WoW, City of Heroes and Old School RuneScape as examples of MMOs players can still jump into now. [1]

Instead, the column said the genre lacks fresh releases that can build excitement. It said 2025 was an “MMO massacre” after many games in development were cancelled and some newer titles shut down soon after launch. “We literally described 2025 as an MMO massacre,” the author wrote. [1]

The recurring PC Gamer feature runs every other week and rotates between hot takes, interviews, polls, discussion and guest writers. [1]
