The two Mega Mewtwo forms will appear only in Super Mega Raids during the global event because of their high power level, and those raids will need a large number of players to take part. [1]
Players who beat a Mega Mewtwo raid boss will get a chance to catch a normal Mewtwo and receive either Mega Energy X or Mega Energy Y, depending on which form they faced. Mewtwo is different from Mega Charizard because it needs two kinds of Mega Energy for its two Mega Evolutions. [1]
Niantic will track Mega Levels separately for each Pokémon, starting with Mega Mewtwo, and any previous progress will carry over. [1]
Players at the in-person Go Fest events in Tokyo, Chicago and Copenhagen can get Mega Mewtwo earlier through a Timed Research quest, but they must choose between Mewtwo X and Mewtwo Y. Each park session at those events will end with a special Mega Mewtwo Super Mega Raid that can host more than 1,000 players. [1]
