Hideo Kojima is creating a horror game titled OD, described as a new form of media that blends game and movie elements in a way never seen before [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. The game is published by Xbox Game Studios after former Xbox head Phil Spencer approved the project, despite many companies rejecting it as "crazy" and difficult to understand, Kojima said [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].
OD is co-written and co-developed with Jordan Peele, director of the horror films Get Out and Nope, adding cinematic horror expertise to the project [1, 2, 3, 5]. The game stars actors Sophia Lillis and Hunter Schafer, as well as the late Udo Kier, whose digital scan was completed before his death in November 2025 [1, 2, 3, 5].
Kojima said OD aims to push the limits of scariness farther than previous games. "I wanted to go beyond the limit of the 'scariness' that other games had reached," he explained. It is a single-player experience designed to be as terrifying as possible. To help players who may become too scared, Kojima has developed a special system allowing them to continue without spoiling details, though he declined to elaborate further [1, 2, 3, 4].
Screenshots recently released show a creepy, dimly lit hallway with an old TV and a dark figure at a doorway. This imagery evokes Kojima’s canceled Silent Hills demo PT, known for its atmospheric horror [2, 4].
Asha Sharma, current head of Xbox, expressed support for OD and its novel approach. She said the game "represents another kind of game" and shows Xbox's commitment to being open to new creative projects. "We need to make sure our platform is sufficiently open so more creators and developers can come on board and be successful, because the next Kojima is yet to be known," Sharma added [1, 2, 3, 5].
OD was first announced in 2023 with a trailer featuring Sophia Lillis [1, 2, 5]. Following recent interviews in June 2026, more details on the scary gameplay system have emerged but remain mostly under wraps [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].
