Sony unveiled God of War: Laufey at its May 2026 State of Play event with a 20-minute gameplay trailer, introducing Faye (Laufey), Kratos' wife, as the new protagonist instead of Kratos [1, 2, 3].
The game is a PS5 spin-off set in an afterlife realm called the Everywhen. This realm features unusual creatures, magic, and gods from multiple mythologies competing for power [1, 2, 3]. Unlike previous entries focusing on Kratos, Faye appears neither fully alive nor dead as she embarks on a mission to aid Kratos and Atreus following her passing [1, 2].
Game director Ariel Lawrence described the challenge of distinguishing Faye's combat style from Kratos’s brutal approach: "Kratos is like a brick wall, and he's a little stoic, but it's just that his brutality is different. How do we show somebody who's his equal as she is?... make something that's uniquely Faye-feeling while still being a Santa Monica game?" [4]. The gameplay trailer showcased fluid and brutal sword-based combat emphasizing Faye's unique power [1, 2, 4, 3].
Creative director Cory Barlog stressed Faye's previously unseen importance in the series: "Faye has way more power than all of them. She is actually the controller of so much within this universe. [...] I don’t know how we’re going to tell this or when we’re going to tell this, but I really want to tell that story of Kratos and Faye meeting." Barlog called Faye "such an anchor to the rebirth of where we were going with the franchise" [1, 4].
The story draws on Greek, Norse, and other mythologies suggested by the diverse creatures present [1, 3]. Fan theories speculate that Faye may have played the horn that summoned the world-ending serpent Jörmungandr, triggering Ragnarok [1, 2].
God of War: Laufey is well into development but lacks a confirmed release date [2, 4]. Meanwhile, Sony is also developing a PS5 remake of the original God of War trilogy and a live-action Amazon series based on the franchise [3].
