Square Enix revealed Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the third and final installment of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, at the Summer Game Fest showcase on June 5, 2026. The game will launch simultaneously worldwide in spring 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC platforms [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8].
The story centers on Cloud Strife and his companions racing to stop Meteor and battling massive creatures known as Weapons as the trilogy's climax unfolds [1, 3, 4, 7, 8]. Director Naoki Hamaguchi said the key theme of Revelation is “resolve,” with the main cast confronting the culmination of their journeys. He told reporters, "Cloud and his pals will each see through the key tenants of their journey that have carried them through to their destinations so far" [1].
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation introduces playable characters Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind for the first time in the remake trilogy. They join returning heroes Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Red XIII, Yuffie, and Cait Sith as the playable cast [1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8]. Players will explore an expansive open world from the iconic airship Highwind, including the ability to parachute down to different areas [2, 3, 4, 7, 8]. New locales include the nation of Wutai, the Mideel archipelago, and the ice-locked Northern Continent [2, 7].
The game features a new combat customization system called FITS that lets players change characters’ fighting styles by swapping outfits that unlock unique abilities. Matt Mercer explained, "The fit system lets characters change their looks and stats with special armors, adding a new layer to combat customization" [2].
Square Enix addressed feedback on minigames by tweaking their design so players can skip or adjust difficulty without losing out on rewards needed for combat progression. Hamaguchi commented, "The request to reduce the number of minigames is a difficult one. I have a very clear policy that I don’t want to change, no matter how much feedback we receive. After all, the original FFVII had an enormous number of minigames." He added, "We’ve incorporated the lessons we learned to make minigames more comfortable to play and to ensure players don’t feel disadvantaged if they choose to skip them" [1, 9].
The remake trilogy began with Final Fantasy 7 Remake launched in 2020, followed by Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in 2024, which expanded the story and world [3, 4, 5]. Hamaguchi reportedly completed over 40 full playthroughs before the final release [1].
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is set for a worldwide release across major platforms in spring 2027 [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8].
