Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 features a revamped DMZ extraction mode set in a new Korean map called Hajin, continuing the story after the campaign concludes. The map is based on the Korean peninsula's tri-point border region, a war-torn nuclear exclusion zone with towns and settlements that players explore as off-the-books CIA assets tasked with securing abandoned military technology before enemy factions can capture it [1, 2, 3].
DMZ introduces player bounty systems where players earn bounties by completing objectives, kills, and other activities, which other players can then claim. The mode includes NPC enemies that coordinate and react to players, including ground troops, enemy vehicles, and boss-level foes [1, 3]. Players can engage in story missions, dynamic multi-step objectives called Dynamic Operations, or freely roam the map to gather resources and complete tasks [1, 2, 3].
Each player operates from a forward operating base (FOB) that can be upgraded with crafting stations, weapons workbenches, and various amenities to support their gameplay style. DMZ also has its own progression system separate from the standard 6v6 multiplayer, tracking operator traits and gear inventories individually [1, 2, 4, 3].
The environment features dynamic weather effects such as rain and fog, and hazardous zones including a nuclear fallout area that requires gas masks or hazmat suits to survive. New gameplay mechanics include the ability to drag and revive teammates, use tourniquets for limited healing, and a stealth system that adds tactical depth to encounters [2, 4, 3].
DMZ is no longer free-to-play as it was in Modern Warfare 2’s beta phase in 2022. Instead, it is included as a core game mode in Modern Warfare 4 [4]. Infinity Ward multiplayer creative director Geoff Smith said, "We actually made a proper DMZ this time. DMZ offers a rich sandbox with escalating AI threats, dangerous bosses, environmental puzzles, raid-like operations, and narrative-driven story missions. It's really more than just a third mode. It's a full-featured game inside Modern Warfare" [3].
Joe Cecot, another multiplayer creative director at Infinity Ward, emphasized the immersive nature of the mode: "I think us being first-person, and the richness of our sandbox; the amount of stuff that you can interact with and play around with... Our rich sandbox combined with our first-person military theme is something that’s going to really resonate with people" [4].
Infinity Ward presented a detailed preview of DMZ’s new features to the press in May 2026 [3].
