Bungie creative director Julia Nardin said the studio knows where it wants to take Marathon’s story over the next few years, but she said player input will still shape the game’s narrative. “We know where we want to take the story over the next few years, but I don’t want to say it’s completely ‘locked in’ because it’s important to us that our players be able to help shape it,” Nardin said. [1]
She said Marathon’s wider world-building will keep changing as Bungie responds to what players have liked in the past and what they want next. Nardin also said players should be able to jump into the game at any time and still uncover the mysteries of Tau Ceti’s past while experiencing its present. [1]
Bungie has already signaled more content ahead. Season 2 is set to begin in early June, and the studio has teased updates that will carry Marathon through August. [1]
The comments follow earlier signals that Bungie is sticking with the game for years. On March 31, a PC optimization blog post ended with the company saying it was “in it for the long haul with Marathon.” [1]
Recent estimates cited in the report suggest Marathon may have sold more than 2 million copies, with most fans playing on PC. [1]
The next dated milestone is Season 2, which is expected to start in early June. [1]
