Bungie said on May 4 it will change grenade stock counts and stack sizes in Marathon after players raised fresh complaints about grenade spamming across the game. [1] The problem has persisted since release, with players able to carry grenades without hard limits beyond backpack capacity. [1]

Grenade spam has grown worse as players collect more gear and settle on meta tactics, especially in high-stakes modes such as Cryo Archive. [1] Players on social media and on the official Marathon Reddit community have called the tactic “broken” and pushed for changes. [1]

Some players want a direct cap on how many grenades can be brought into a match. Ryan Horath said the issue affects many shooters, but argued for an inventory item to slow it down: “The grenade spam is an issue. But every single FPS game has had this issue. Some have had it for years. I think there just needs to be a grenade belt in inventory that limits it. Or utility belt generally.” [1] Another player, the_eccentricity, said people have learned how “absolutely broken” it is to throw 8 flechette grenades, wait for a push, then throw 10 more. [1]

The complaints escalated after one player, SayLes, wrote, “Not a single weapon was shot what a joke of a game.” [1] Bungie’s development team responded that “it’s not a good experience to open up a fight only to be barraged with dozens of grenades,” and said it is looking to push changes to stock counts and stack sizes. [1]

That makes the planned inventory changes the next step for Marathon as Bungie tries to curb grenade spam without removing throwables from the game. [1]
