Ouster on Monday launched Rev8, a new lineup of lidar sensors that capture color imagery and 3D depth at the same time, combining lidar and camera functions in one unit. [1]

CEO Angus Pacala said the aim is to replace separate cameras with a single sensor. “The goal is to obviate cameras. There’s no reason that one sensor can’t do both,” he said. He also said companies now spend too much time calibrating and fusing lidar and camera data streams. [1]

The launch comes as the lidar market consolidates. Ouster has already acquired Velodyne, while Luminar’s assets were bought in bankruptcy. [1]

Pacala said demand for sensors is rising quickly as robotaxis spread through fleets such as Waymo’s and as investors pour money into robotics. Ouster is pitching Rev8 into that market as firms look for simpler sensor stacks and less software work to merge separate feeds. [1]

Ouster said Rev8 is now part of its sensor lineup after the May 4 announcement. [1]
