OpenAI announced on June 11 it has agreed to acquire Ona, a startup providing secure cloud environments for AI agents, to integrate the company into its Codex team after the deal closes [1, 2, 3]. Ona’s technology enables AI agents to access tools, systems, and context in pre-configured cloud settings, allowing Codex to manage longer-running tasks and support AI deployment in production environments [2].
OpenAI’s Codex AI coding tools have seen user growth from 3 million weekly active users in April to more than 5 million as of June [1, 2]. By integrating Ona’s cloud platform, OpenAI aims to expand Codex’s capabilities and better serve its growing user base.
Johannes Landgraf, Ona’s CEO, said on LinkedIn that he viewed the acquisition as “our life's work just got bigger and more important,” reflecting the startup’s alignment with OpenAI’s mission [2].
The financial terms of the Ona acquisition were not disclosed. The deal remains subject to customary closing conditions to finalize [1, 2]. Once completed, Ona will join the Codex team to accelerate development.
This transaction follows several recent acquisitions by OpenAI, including the $60 million purchase of healthcare tech startup Torch in January, cybersecurity startup Promptfoo in March, AI-interface maker Software Applications in October 2025, and AI devices startup io for over $6 billion in May 2025 [2].
OpenAI plans to complete the acquisition closing according to standard regulatory and contractual procedures, with integration expected to begin afterward [1, 2].
