Midjourney revealed the Midjourney Scanner on June 17, 2026, a full-body ultrasonic imaging device that scans a person's body in 60 seconds or less using a ring of sensors embedded in a shallow water pool [1, 2, 3, 4]. The scanner emits ultrasound waves from about 40 Butterfly Ultrasound-on-Chip modules positioned around the ring, capturing data from multiple angles similar to dolphin echolocation to build a detailed 3D body composition map [1, 3]. The image quality rivals that of MRI scans in many respects [1, 2, 3, 4].
The scanning process submerges the individual in water, using nearly half a million tiny sensor units on the ring to collect data quickly and noninvasively [3]. This approach drastically speeds up whole-body imaging compared to conventional MRI, which can take much longer [1, 2, 3, 4].
Midjourney partnered exclusively with Butterfly Network in November 2025 to license its Ultrasound-on-Chip technology for the scanner [1, 3]. Ahmad Abbas joined the company in late 2023 to lead hardware development on this project [3].
Chief Executive Officer David Holz envisions the scanner being used frequently, even daily, by people to monitor health changes from diet or exercise. "I'm not the most measured man on Earth yet, you know, but maybe I want to have that daily [measurable information]," Holz said [1]. Midjourney aims to combine medical-grade imaging with a casual experience. A company blog stated: "The scanner will be as powerful as MRI, and as casual as a trip to the spa." [2, 3]
Midjourney plans to open its first "Midjourney Spa" in San Francisco by 2027. The spa will feature the scanner alongside wellness amenities such as hot tubs, saunas, and cold plunge areas, promoting a relaxed setting for health scanning [2, 3, 4]. Over the next 12 months, the company intends to improve scanning algorithms, develop new hardware, conduct research trials, and build a "research spa" [3, 4].
The company targets deployment of second and third-generation scanners between 2027 and 2028, followed by expansive growth to more cities with over 50,000 scanners planned worldwide by 2031 [3, 4].
Medical experts have cautioned against frequent full-body scanning without clinical context. Radiologists noted that "frequent full-body scanning can lead to incidental findings, false positives, anxiety, and unnecessary follow-up care" [2].
Midjourney’s next milestone includes continuing research trials and algorithm refinement throughout 2026 and 2027 in preparation for the spa’s opening and broader commercial rollout.
