The identity of Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto remains unconfirmed, even after multiple recent investigations reached different conclusions. [1]

Tyler Maroney’s documentary, Finding Satoshi, concludes that Nakamoto was likely a collaboration between Hal Finney and Len Sassaman, both now dead. [1] John Carreyrou, after an 18-month investigation, said he is 99.5 to 100 percent certain that Adam Back is Nakamoto, though Back denies it. [1]

Nakamoto ended all online activity in 2011 and is estimated to have accumulated about 1.1 million bitcoins, worth roughly $83 billion at current values. [1] The only definitive proof of the creator’s identity would be the use of the unique cryptographic key tied to Nakamoto’s wallet. [1]

The debate has persisted despite years of inquiry because no investigator has produced that key or any other proof accepted as final. [1] In December 2024, Maroney met with a Wired reporter and shared his investigation into Nakamoto’s identity. [1] In April 2025, about a week before Maroney’s documentary release, Carreyrou published his own Bitcoin creator investigation in The New York Times. [1]
