California’s Department of Motor Vehicles issued 2 new autonomous vehicle testing and deployment rule sets this week, totaling 100 pages and adding requirements for data collection and sharing, training and operations. [1]

The rules also let law enforcement cite autonomous vehicle companies when their vehicles commit traffic violations. The DMV calls the citation process the “Notice of Autonomous Vehicle Noncompliance.” [1]

Under the new system, manufacturers must report a violation to the DMV within 72 hours after they receive notice from law enforcement. The report says there does not appear to be a monetary fine attached to the violations. [1]

The DMV’s package comes as California tightens oversight of autonomous vehicle testing and deployment. The agency’s rules were issued this week, and TechCrunch’s Mobility newsletter covered them on May 3, 2026. [1]
