Apple unveiled macOS 27 Golden Gate as the successor to macOS 26 Tahoe at WWDC 2026 on June 8 in the US [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. The new operating system only supports Apple Silicon Macs, dropping Intel compatibility, and runs on models including MacBook Neo (2026), MacBook Pro and Air (2020+), Mac mini (2020+), iMac (2021+), Mac Studio (2022+), and Mac Pro (2023+) [2, 4]. Some advanced AI features demand M3 Macs with a minimum of 12 GB RAM and thus exclude certain newer low-end models [4].

Golden Gate introduces a global slider to adjust the opacity of Liquid Glass UI effects, alongside tighter window corner radius to enhance interface appearance [1, 2, 5]. App toolbars have been unified and sidebar icons now stretch fully to their edges with restored colors [1, 5]. Search functions across Spotlight, Mail, and Photos have been rebuilt with fresh indexing for more reliable and faster results [1, 2, 5]. Safari gains a new feature automatically grouping tabs by topics, with Apple explaining, "Safari analyzes each page, identifies similarities, and then brings related tabs together" [6].

Performance improvements are significant. Apple reported smoother animations, faster app launches, and notable speed gains in Photos (70% faster display), AirDrop (80% faster), and cloud drive transfers (up to 5 times faster) [3, 5]. "We focused on improving macOS's performance and dozens of underlying technologies this year," Apple said [5].

Siri AI relaunches as a dedicated app powered by Google's Gemini foundation models with enhanced natural language processing, personal context awareness, automatic proofreading, and customizable voices [1, 4, 5]. However, these Siri AI features will not be available initially in the EU or China due to regulatory issues [4, 5].

Developers received the macOS 27 Golden Gate beta on June 8 [4, 5, 6]. Public beta testing is expected to start in July, followed by a full public release scheduled for fall 2026 [4, 5, 6]. Apple also removed the $99 fee for developer accounts to access early betas, allowing free registration [6].
