The headphones stay instantly recognizable. They use milled aluminum, magnetic replaceable ear cups, a button and dial on the right ear cup, and the mesh headband Apple calls the canopy. The canopy helps them feel lighter, even though they are 2 ounces heavier than other headphones. [1]
Apple also expands the software side. The AirPods Max 2 add gesture controls, Adaptive Audio, Siri support and Live Translation. The review says those features give the headphones more day-to-day flexibility without changing the core design. [1]
