The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on 2026-05-01 updated Oscar rules to exclude AI-generated actors and screenplays from eligibility. [1]
Only performances credited in a film’s legal billing and demonstrably performed by humans with their consent can qualify for Oscars, the Academy said. [1]
The Academy also said screenplays must be human-authored to be eligible. It reserved the right to ask for more information about a film’s use of AI and about human authorship. [1]
The rule changes come as the industry wrestles with AI-generated performers, including an AI version of Val Kilmer and the so-called “actress” Tilly Norwood. They also follow disputes over AI during the 2023 actors’ and writers’ strikes. [1]
Outside film, at least one novel was pulled by its publisher over apparent AI use, and some writers’ groups say AI work is not eligible for awards. [1]
