Ed Orgeron has returned to LSU as a special assistant to recruiting and defense on head coach Lane Kiffin's staff, announced around June 14, 2026 [1, 2, 3]. Orgeron previously served as LSU’s head coach from 2016 to 2021. He led the Tigers to a national championship with an undefeated 15-0 season in 2019 [1, 2]. He compiled an overall record of 51-20 before being fired in 2021, after which he was paid a $17.1 million buyout [1, 2].

In his new role, Orgeron will recruit for LSU under recent NCAA rule changes. He is expected to focus especially on recruiting within Louisiana, a priority area for the program [1, 2, 3]. Kiffin praised Orgeron’s value, saying, “I’m excited to bring Coach Orgeron back to LSU. He brings us tremendous value with his ability to recruit elite players nationally, but especially the impact he can have for us recruiting the great state of Louisiana. Coach O understands my expectations and commitment to being a championship program. I look forward to seeing him with recruits and his intensity working with our defensive players.” [2]

Orgeron’s coaching relationship with Kiffin dates back to their time together at USC under Pete Carroll in 2001 [1, 2, 3]. Orgeron served on Kiffin’s staff at Tennessee and USC, and succeeded Kiffin as USC’s interim head coach in 2013 [1, 2].

Orgeron joked about rejoining LSU, saying, “It’s a minor adjustment. Back then, we used to walk through the back door with the cash, now we just gotta walk through the front door with the cash. A joke, obviously.” [2]

His return is seen as addressing key recruiting and cultural weaknesses during the previous regime under Brian Kelly [3]. LSU’s announcement came just days ago ahead of the 2026 season preparations [1, 2, 3].
