Curaçao parted ways with coach Fred Rutten about a month before the 2026 World Cup, the federation said, as the Caribbean side prepares for its first appearance at the tournament. [1, 2]
Rutten, 63, took charge in February and oversaw two March friendlies that ended in losses to Australia, 5-1, and China, 2-0. Curaçao has been drawn in Group E with Germany, Ecuador and Ivory Coast. [1]
The federation said Rutten left after constructive talks aimed at protecting stability and healthy professional relationships within the team and staff. Rutten said quitting was the right decision because time was short and Curaçao needed to move on. “There must not be a climate that harms healthy professional relationships within the team or staff,” he said. “That is why stepping down is the right decision. Time is pressing and Curaçao must move forward.” [2]
FFK also praised Rutten for his professionalism, leadership and commitment to Curaçao football. Federation president Gilbert Martina described the change as “the circle of life.” [2]
The federation said it expected to announce a replacement on Tuesday morning. [2]
