President Donald Trump told congressional leaders that US hostilities with Iran had "terminated" during an ongoing ceasefire, and said the pause meant he did not have to meet the War Powers Act deadline for congressional approval. [1]

Trump said in his letter that "the hostilities that began on February 28, 2026 have terminated" and that there had been no exchange of fire between US forces and Iran since April 7. [1]

US law requires a president to get Congress' approval within 60 days of notifying lawmakers of military action, or end the hostilities. Trump wrote to congressional leaders on the 60th day after formally notifying Congress of strikes against Iran. [1]

He also said the United States and Iran had not yet reached a longer-term peace deal. On Saturday evening, Trump said he would be looking at an Iranian proposal for talks "now" and would share details later. [1]

Trump said he might resume strikes if Iran "misbehave[s]" or "do[es] something bad," keeping pressure on Tehran even as the ceasefire held. [1]
