President Donald Trump said the U.S. would help guide stranded ships out of the Strait of Hormuz to ensure their safe passage after tensions surged in the key waterway. [1, 2]
Trump described the effort as “Project Freedom” and called it a humanitarian gesture involving the U.S., Middle Eastern countries and, in particular, Iran. “I have told my Representatives to inform them that we will use best efforts to get their Ships and Crews safely out of the Strait,” he said. “Project Freedom would be a humanitarian gesture on behalf of the United States, Middle Eastern Countries but, in particular, the Country of Iran.” [2]
Oil markets reacted sharply. Brent crude rose more than 5% to above $114 a barrel after reports of tension in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy shipments. [1]
The announcement came after unverified Iranian media reports said two missiles hit an American patrol boat. U.S. Central Command denied the attack took place. [1]
Iran's military unified command also warned U.S. and other foreign armed forces to stay out of the Strait and threatened attacks if they entered. It also told commercial ships and oil tankers to avoid moving through the strait without coordination with Iran. [2]
