Several artists originally booked for the US 250th Independence Day music festival have pulled out, citing political polarization and ties to the Trump administration and White House [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6].
The Freedom 250 group, created by a 2025 executive order signed by Trump, is organizing a Great American State Fair concert series from June 25 to July 10, 2026, on the National Mall in Washington DC to celebrate America's 250th birthday [1, 2, 4].
Nine artists were initially announced for the 16-day festival, but by May 30 at least five had withdrawn. This includes Martina McBride, Poison's Bret Michaels, The Commodores, Young MC, and Morris Day [1, 3, 4, 5, 6]. Bret Michaels said he pulled out because the event had become "something more divisive than when I agreed to participate" [2]. Martina McBride also cited politicization concerns [2, 3].
Remaining performers include Vanilla Ice, Milli Vanilli, C+C Music Factory, and Flo Rida. Vanilla Ice is scheduled to appear June 26 and Flo Rida on July 2 [1, 3, 4, 5, 6]. Vanilla Ice said, "I am here to party with America; music is meant to bring people together" [3].
President Donald Trump publicly criticized the artists on May 30. He called the performers "overpriced, boring and chicken to perform," and declared, "Cancel it. These performers are overpriced, boring and are chicken to perform. I’m considering replacing with a Make America Great Again rally" [1]. He also said, "I am considering bringing on the most charismatic person in the world who doesn’t need a guitar, one who draws bigger crowds than Elvis in his prime — myself" [3]. On Truth Social, Trump said he might hold a MAGA rally on June 24, 2026, at the National Mall instead of the concert series [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6].
Freedom 250 spokeswoman Danielle Alvarez confirmed Trump will personally open the festival on June 24 with a ceremony celebrating the 250th birthday [1, 4]. Trump’s 80th birthday on June 14 will also be marked by a UFC event on the White House South Lawn as part of the anniversary events [2, 5].
Freedom 250 was established under a 2025 Trump executive order to organize the country's 250th anniversary events. Separately, America250, a bipartisan group created by Congress a decade ago, organizes other celebrations in New York, Philadelphia, and California [1].
