The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) received nearly 400 complaints about electric and gas oven door glass suddenly shattering between January 2025 and March 2026, with more than 40 injuries reported across the country [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].
Frigidaire was the most frequently mentioned brand, with 263 complaints, followed by GE with 63, Whirlpool at 35, LG with 15, and Samsung with 10 [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. Consumers reported incidents involving popular oven models such as the Frigidaire FFEF, LFEF, FCRE series; GE JGBS and JGB7 series; and Whirlpool WFG3 series [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].
Many reports said the glass shattered when the oven was turned off or had not been used for days. Consumers described loud explosions sounding like "a small bomb." A consumer from Lewisville, North Carolina, said, "If someone had been standing nearby, the consequences could have been very serious" [1]. Another recalled, "Luckily my whole family was asleep. I have five children who often stand near the oven; I can't imagine the injuries if it had happened then" [1].
Samsung, Whirlpool, GE, and Electrolux—the parent company of Frigidaire—said their products meet third-party safety standards. Samsung noted it offers free repairs of oven door glass, including parts and labor, even beyond the warranty period, stating, "The company provides free oven door glass repair services, including parts and labor, even after the warranty expires" [1].
Electrolux explained some glass failures result from invisible defects in tempered glass that usually appear early in use and are covered by warranty. For breakages occurring after the first year, the company said, "These are often caused by impacts or scratches from normal daily use" [1].
The complaints predominantly involved ovens 4 to 6 years post-purchase, often beyond warranty coverage; some incidents occurred after more than 10 years of use [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].
Consumers are advised to report incidents to the CPSC's SaferProducts.gov portal and contact manufacturers’ customer service for assistance [1, 2, 3, 4].
Meanwhile, a class action lawsuit was filed against Electrolux in federal court over Frigidaire oven glass breaking. The suit alleges the glass is prone to breaking and that Electrolux knew of defects and risks. A preliminary settlement was reportedly reached in March 2026 [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].
