NTT Data Group said on 2026-04-30 it agreed to buy an unspecified amount of carbon removal credits from Switzerland-based startup Climeworks as the Japanese company looks to meet its climate goals. [1]
Climeworks co-CEO Christoph Gebald said the deal could supply a few hundred thousand tons of carbon removal credits over a decade. NTT Data employs about 200,000 people worldwide. [1]
The companies said the agreement is the first partnership between Climeworks and a major AI infrastructure company. NTT Data chief sustainability officer David Costa said, "Clients are asking for sustainability strategies that are measurable, operational and grounded in real data." [1]
NTT Data aims to essentially zero out emissions tied directly to its data centers by 2030 and then offset additional emissions by 2040 with the credits. The company said the plan supports its wider climate targets as energy demand from AI pushes data centers under closer scrutiny. [1]
Giana Amador, founding executive director of the Carbon Removal Alliance, said, "Carbon removal is quite attractive because the technology doesn't have to be built alongside a data center project. They can purchase it as an offset." [1]
The next milestone in the deal is NTT Data's 2030 target to cut emissions tied directly to its data centers to essentially zero. [1]
