Singapore Airlines said on Monday it will progressively add Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellite broadband service on selected flights, with the rollout set to start in the first quarter of 2027 and run through end-2029. [1]
The service will be limited to SIA’s Airbus A350-900 long-haul, A350-900 ultra-long-range and A380 aircraft. It will be unlimited and complimentary for passengers. [1]
Customers in all cabin classes on Starlink-equipped flights will be able to use the connection from take-off to landing for video streaming, social media sharing, gaming and sending large files. That is a broader window than SIA’s current in-flight Wi-Fi, which is available about 15 minutes after take-off and until about 15 minutes before arrival, and does not support streaming apps such as Disney+, Netflix and YouTube. [1]
Mr Yeoh Phee Teik, SIA’s senior vice-president for customer experience, said: “Singapore Airlines already offers the world’s most comprehensive complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi across our entire fleet.” He added that “Starlink will take this to the next level by delivering next-generation high-speed connectivity.” [1]
SIA said all of its aircraft are equipped with Wi-Fi except the Boeing 737-800NGs. The airline did not give a flight-by-flight timetable, but said the Starlink installation will be phased across the eligible fleet over the rollout period. [1]
The airline’s announcement on May 4 comes as carriers continue to expand onboard connectivity and move to faster satellite networks. SIA said the Starlink service will be introduced first on the eligible widebody aircraft, with the rollout continuing until the end of 2029. [1]
