The R&A and USGA have postponed the rollout of the golf-ball distance rollback rule from 2028 to 2030, choosing a single implementation date instead of the previously planned phased approach starting in 2028 [1, 2, 3].

The rule aims to limit the maximum golf ball travel distance to 317 yards, with a three-yard tolerance, under updated testing conditions that raise the swing speed from the current 120 mph to 125 mph [1, 3]. This revision is expected to reduce shot distances by about 15 yards [2].

Average driving distances on the PGA Tour have steadily increased, reaching approximately 302.8 yards in 2025, up from 286.5 yards in 2004, with many players surpassing these averages. The increasing distances have raised concerns about golf course obsolescence and the long-term sustainability of play [1, 3].

The delay follows extensive feedback from tours and industry stakeholders, including the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and the PGA Tour Player Advisory Council. Most supported a single implementation date in 2030 rather than a two-step introduction beginning in 2028 [1, 2, 3].

A joint statement from the R&A, USGA, PGA Tour and DP World Tour said, "Over the past eight years, The USGA and The R&A have raised concern about distance increases and the long-term consequences of failing to address this consistent trend." They added, "Feedback from the industry... indicated that the majority support a single-date implementation (2030) versus a two-date, phased implementation (2028 and 2030)."

The governing bodies also expressed concern that the revised Overall Distance Standard (ODS) testing approach may not achieve the desired reduction in distances. They stated, "There will be no change to the ODS testing approach until January 2030 while these options are evaluated" [1].

USGA chief executive Mike Whan described the delay as "creating a sense of urgency for all parties," emphasizing the need for collaboration as the golf community prepares for the rule's adoption [2].

The next major step is the implementation of the rollback rule across the game in 2030.
