Meridian Secondary School won the National School Games B Division football final against Tanjong Katong Secondary School (TKSS) in a penalty shoot-out on May 12 at Serangoon Stadium after the match was extended over multiple days due to weather interruptions [1, 2, 3].
The final began a week earlier at Our Tampines Hub but was halted twice—first in the 35th minute and again at the 63rd minute—because of heavy rain and lightning [1, 2, 3]. Meridian led 1-0 when play was suspended on the earlier day, thanks to a 50th-minute goal by winger Lutfan Danial [1, 2, 3].
When play resumed on May 12, TKSS quickly equalized with a goal by Evan Liu just four minutes in, leveling the score 1-1 [1, 2, 3]. Neither side scored through the remainder of regulation or during extra time, sending the match into a penalty shoot-out [1, 2, 3].
The shoot-out extended into sudden death with both teams scoring multiple penalties. Meridian ultimately prevailed 8-7 after their captain and goalkeeper Evan Lee made the decisive save against TKSS player Phua Wenze [1, 2, 3]. Lee said, "I was telling myself ‘I need to save this penalty’. It would take a huge weight off our shoulders and win the game for us." [1]
This victory gives Meridian its second National School Games B Division title since 2024 [1, 2, 3]. TKSS players were left devastated by the narrow loss, missing out on their first-ever title after a decade of attempts [1, 2, 3].
Meridian’s coach Fabio da Silva praised his team’s cohesion and spirit, noting it fulfilled a promise of a Brazilian barbecue treat made after winning the semi-finals [1, 2, 3].
