Max Verstappen, 28, said the planned 2027 Formula One engine regulation changes make it more likely he will remain in the sport beyond 2026. The changes shift power output from the current 50-50 electric-to-internal combustion engine split to a 40-60 ratio favoring internal combustion engines, which Verstappen believes will improve racing quality and driving conditions. The FIA, Formula One management, and engine manufacturers agreed in principle on the 60-40 power split on May 21, but some makers such as Audi and Ferrari have opposed or sought to delay the changes until 2028. [6, 7, 8, 9] Verstappen criticized the current 50-50 system, calling it "mentally not doable" and saying it damages the quality of racing. He threatened to quit if the changes were blocked. Verstappen said, "I just want a good product in Formula One, and that will for sure improve the product," adding the new rules are "very, very positive — or at least, almost back to normal." [1, 3] He remained upbeat on his own racing form and team progress and said he expects to stay in Formula One barring "really crazy things." "I hope everyone keeps their word. But I can confirm that I’m staying in Formula One," he said in an interview on May 23 at the Canadian Grand Prix. [10]
Other drivers including George Russell, Lando Norris, and Oscar Piastri have welcomed the changes as a step to improve racing quality and reliability. [2, 6] However, some manufacturers remain opposed, making the rules political as teams lobby to delay for competitive advantage, Verstappen said. [7, 8, 9]
Engineering challenges remain, including impacts on engine design and fuel tank size, and the package has not yet been formally ratified. [1, 3, 4, 5] Verstappen recently made his GT3 Nürburgring 24-hour race debut ahead of the Canadian GP, finishing with mechanical failure but planning to return to endurance racing. [1, 3, 4, 5, 10]
On May 23, Verstappen reaffirmed his expected 2027 Formula One presence at the Canadian Grand Prix, saying "unless some really crazy things happen" he will continue racing after 2026. [10]
