Jim Furyk will captain the US Ryder Cup team at the 2027 matches, scheduled to begin September 17 at Adare Manor in Ireland [1]. Furyk, who turned 56 on May 12, was previously US captain in 2018 when the team lost in France [2, 3, 4, 1].

Furyk said he has not yet spoken to Tiger Woods since the golfer’s March 27 car crash in Florida but intends to reach out. “We haven’t spoken yet. Out of courtesy and for him, his family, and I know maybe a road to health, I haven’t reached out, but I will. Definitely,” Furyk said [2]. Woods, who has 15 major championship wins, was considered for the 2027 captaincy but is currently on a break from golf while undergoing treatment following DUI-related charges from the crash [2, 3, 4, 1].

Tiger Woods was charged with DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test after the accident. He cleared breathalyzer tests but refused a urine test, which led to the charges [1]. Furyk said he expects Woods to have some advisory or staff role with the 2027 US team. "I will say I enjoyed serving – I use that word serving – as a vice-captain with him a number of times. I think he brought a lot to the team room and a lot of knowledge and a lot of experience," Furyk said [1].

The US team has struggled on European soil, winning just once since 1993 and losing 11 of the past 15 Ryder Cups played there [2, 3, 4]. Furyk emphasized the need to raise the priority the US places on the Ryder Cup year-round. "We really need to start making the Ryder Cup more of a priority each and every year, year in and year out, and focus on growing and evolving into the future. So that’s something that I really take seriously," he said [5].

Furyk outlined plans to create a long-term blueprint to build continuity among players and future captains. "When I look at my job, it’s really to create a culture, a chemistry amongst them and put them in positions where they can be really successful," he said. "Then I really look at it from a long-term perspective. We need to create a blueprint. We need to create more continuity for our players and our future captains," he added [2, 5].

Furyk spoke publicly about his captaincy and the potential Tiger Woods role on May 13 at Aronimink ahead of the PGA Championship [2, 5, 3, 4, 1]. The 2027 Ryder Cup remains scheduled to begin September 17 at Adare Manor in Ireland with Furyk leading the US squad [1].
