Jareau Tan Yang Han, 26, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia, was sentenced on May 21, 2026, to two years and 12 weeks’ imprisonment and six strokes of the cane for attempted robbery, assault, and sexual exposure offenses committed in 2025 [1, 2].

Tan was originally placed under a mandatory treatment order (MTO) in January 2024 for mischief and property-related offenses. The order lasted two years, but he breached it by reoffending in 2025 [1, 2]. On February 18, 2025, he exposed himself and performed a sexual act in front of a male food delivery rider at his home [1, 2].

On August 7, 2025, Tan attempted to rob a 17-year-old girl by kicking her chest and abdomen. He also assaulted a 4-year-old boy later that day. After arguing with his mother over allowance that evening, he threw household items on the floor and banged his head against a television set, cracking the screen [1, 2].

Deputy Public Prosecutor Dillon Kok said Tan was in a psychotic relapse during the offences but added, "His schizophrenia would, accordingly, be regarded as having conferred only a partial contributory link to his offending behaviours at best" [1].

District Judge Eddy Tham noted that Tan posed a danger to society. He added, "Tan had posed a danger to society, and can receive treatment when he is behind bars" [1].

Tan’s sentencing marked a conclusion to a series of violent and sexual offences committed while under the MTO. The court’s decision balances incarceration with opportunities for treatment during his jail term.

His prison sentence and corporal punishment will run from May 21, 2026, marking the next phase of his mandated custodial care.
