Peter Wang, age 51, was honored on May 4, 2026, with the first SkillsFuture Lifelong Learning Award, celebrating his dedication to upskilling and impact in the workplace [1].
Wang returned to education in 2021 after a 30-year break, starting with a NITEC course at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) [1]. He then enrolled part-time for a Diploma in Engineering (Building Services & Fire Safety) at Ngee Ann Polytechnic in October 2023 [1].
Originally, Wang left school with only one O-level pass in Chinese mother tongue and was only conditionally promoted up to Secondary 3 [1]. His decision to resume studying came after a condominium manager job interview in which his lack of higher academic qualifications was questioned [1].
Before returning to school, Wang worked for 12 years as a driving instructor and another 16 years in property management [1]. He found studying challenging at first, even forgetting how to use a scientific calculator, but received support from his four children, aged 14 to 20 years [1].
More than 25,000 polytechnic students graduated across Singapore in May 2026 [1]. Wang’s recognition on the same day places him among notable learners who pursue education later in life.
Wang’s next steps include completing his diploma program and continuing to contribute to Singapore’s workforce with his enhanced skills.
