Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced it will conduct a trial of road signs and markings as visual cues for the new Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) 2 system. The trial will run from June 1 to July 31, 2026, at five existing ERP locations across the island [1, 2].

The new ERP 2 system, set to launch on January 1, 2027, will replace physical gantries with satellite-based tolling technology. This system determines vehicle location via satellite, enabling automatic toll charges without the need for overhead gantries [1, 2].

The trial sites include the PIE westbound after Kallang Bahru, PIE westbound before Eunos Link, CTE southbound from Serangoon Road 2, Marina Boulevard to MCE eastbound, and the city-bound AYE after Jurong Town Hall [1].

About 1,000 motorists will participate, using full ERP 2 on-board units (OBUs) that provide notifications, handle automatic payments, and support touchscreen interactions. These devices alert drivers in advance of ERP charges and provide charge details within ERP zones [1, 2].

Earlier, a phase one trial in March tested road markings such as blue oval E symbols and 25-meter blue stretches along Bayshore Drive. The results prompted refinements, including safety tests for skid resistance and improved visibility of road markings [1, 2].

The new signs and markings will complement the in-vehicle alerts to help motorists adjust smoothly to the satellite-based tolling system.

LTA is collaborating with the Automobile Association of Singapore, the Singapore Road Safety Council, and other motoring stakeholders to conduct the trials [1, 2].

The phase two trial starting June 1 is a key step before the nationwide launch of ERP 2 on January 1, 2027 [1, 2].
