Singapore installed new clockwise and anticlockwise wayfinding signs at Promenade, Esplanade, Buona Vista, and Paya Lebar stations on May 29, 2026. The signs aim to prepare passengers for the Circle Line's transition to a full closed loop on July 12, 2026, when three new stations open. The new stations—Keppel, Cantonment, and Prince Edward Road—will connect HarbourFront and Marina Bay stations, completing the sixth stage of the Circle Line extension. This will bring the total number of stations to 33 and stretch the loop to nearly 40 kilometers [1, 2, 3, 4].
Train directions will be indicated as "clockwise loop" or "anticlockwise loop" with the phrase "via [next interchange]" to clarify the route. If "loop" is not displayed, it means the train terminates at a specific station. Esplanade, Bras Basah, and Dhoby Ghaut stations lie on a branch that diverges from the loop at Promenade, so their signs omit the word "loop." The updated signage includes static platform and train displays, digital arrival boards, and public address announcements [1, 2, 3, 4].
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) consulted more than 50 stakeholders and surveyed over 3,000 public members in 2025 to choose the best directional wording. The majority preferred "clockwise" and "anticlockwise" terms over earlier options like "inner loop" and "outer loop." The new signs replace the previous system that identified direction only by the name of the terminating station to make navigation easier once the full loop is operational [1, 2, 3, 4].
Passenger responses to the new signage have been mixed. Some found the font size too small and the information cluttered. Mr. Brian Ho, 37, said the signs were "quite small and confusing" and suggested, "They should retain the old design and just add the directions (clockwise and anticlockwise)." Another commuter, 李树华 (Li Shuhua), 72, said the font was too small to read, while Clara Ryan, 40, offered a contrasting view in Chinese, stating that the "‘顺时针’和‘逆时针’标识简单易懂,没有歧义" (clockwise and anticlockwise signs are simple to understand and unambiguous) [1, 2, 3, 4].
The full Circle Line loop, including the three new stations, will open on July 12, 2026, completing Singapore’s sixth stage extension of the line [1, 2, 3, 4].
