Six family members, including a toddler and an infant, were killed in a collision involving a Proton X50 SUV and a 10-tonne tipper truck at Kampung Baru Pinang Tunggal in Sungai Petani on June 7 around 3:46 pm to 3:50 pm [1, 2, 3]. The SUV was carrying seven people; six died at the scene while a 3-year-old girl, Aulia Sofea Ahmad Shafiq, was seriously injured and hospitalized [1, 4, 5].

The deceased were identified as Ahmad Shafiq Ahmad Shukri (27), Nora Mhd Husin (55), Jamaliah Sannusi (27), Ahmad Fahim Ahmad Shukri (21), a 7-year-old boy named Iskandar Affan Ibrahim, and a 6-month-old baby [1, 6, 2, 3]. Iskandar Affan Ibrahim was buried at Permatang Kuang Mosque Muslim Cemetery in Penaga, while the other five victims were buried at Al Abidi Mosque Muslim Cemetery in Merbok the following day [6, 7, 8].

The family had been traveling from Penang to Merbok to visit a late relative's grave [6, 2, 9, 3]. They had just purchased the Proton X50 hours before the crash, with Ahmad Fahim Ahmad Shukri, 21, the vehicle owner, driving at the time [6, 10, 9, 11]. Initial reports mistakenly identified Ahmad Shafiq as the driver, but police later confirmed it was his younger brother Fahim [10, 11].

According to police, the 49-year-old lorry driver escaped unharmed and was driving at about 60 km/h when the crash happened [3, 12]. He was briefly detained but released after the court rejected a police remand request [12]. Dashcam footage showed the SUV had entered the opposite lane before colliding with the soil-laden truck on a straight stretch [9].

Kedah Police Chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah said, "Some people told me that the lorry driver was drunk ... here, I would like to inform that the victims are Malay and the lorry driver is also a Malay, so such actions are highly irresponsible" [3]. The bereaved family expressed their grief, with Iskandar's father saying, "Iskandar left me with a memory on my birthday by leaving me forever. I have accepted his passing, although he was my only son" [6].

The three-year-old girl injured remains hospitalized. Authorities continue investigations, while the victim families conduct funeral rites. The lorry driver's release marks the latest legal development after the crash.
