Dr Sathia Prakash Nadarajan, Selangor PKR election director, criticized what he sees as double standards in political reactions toward entertainment festivals in Malaysia. He questioned why the Rain Rave festival in Kuala Lumpur faced cancellation calls while the Melaka Water Music Festival did not, despite having similar content and formats.
The Melaka Water Music Festival took place from May 1 to 3, 2026, at Pantai Klebang. It featured musical performances, cultural showcases, food stalls, and community entertainment designed to engage local audiences and visitors. The event concluded without calls for cancellation or controversy that had surrounded a comparable festival in the capital city on the same dates [1].
"The question is straightforward — if such an event is considered unsuitable in Kuala Lumpur, why is the same approach not applied when a similar event takes place in Melaka?" Dr Sathia said in his statement issued on May 1 [1].
He emphasized that political evaluations of public events should be grounded in fairness and consistent principles rather than influenced by the event’s location or political convenience. "Credibility is not built on strong statements on a single issue, but through consistency across all situations. In the end, the people are not asking for perfection, but fairness. And fairness begins with one basic principle — do not be selective," he added [1].
Dr Sathia also clarified that his comments were not intended as personal attacks on any individual or group but were aimed at urging uniform political standards for evaluating entertainment events throughout Malaysia [1].
The Melaka Water Music Festival ran from May 1 through May 3 and concluded successfully. Dr Sathia’s call for consistency highlights ongoing debates over political attitudes toward entertainment festivals in different regions of the country, with next developments expected as further events take place.
