Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari urged the public to respect royal institutions and ulama beyond political differences during a Labour Day event on May 4, 2026 [1]. He emphasized that the monarchy and religious leaders serve as symbols of unity.

The call follows a viral Facebook post from April 2026 that was deemed insulting to the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. The Selangor police received 280 reports concerning the post [1]. Authorities arrested a man in his 30s at 7:10pm on May 3 in Bukit Mertajam, Penang to assist investigation [1].

Amirudin said, "Even if there are differences in politics, we as fellow human beings should avoid insults, let alone humiliation. That is the basic principle." He urged police to take strong action against insults involving religion, race, and royalty (3R), stating, "That is why I asked the police to take action. Such actions justify the government taking enforcement measures on issues involving religion, race and royalty (3R)." [1]

He acknowledged criticism from the opposition claiming such enforcement suppresses voices but said, "In the past, enforcement action was often criticised by the opposition, who claimed the government was trying to silence voices. But from what I see now, the impact has become extraordinary. This issue must be addressed." [1]

The police continue to investigate the case tied to the Facebook post and potential further actions remain pending as the inquiry proceeds [1].
