Russian President Vladimir Putin met Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on June 18 at the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit in Kazan to discuss deepening ties between their countries ahead of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027 [1, 2]. Putin said, "Next year will mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between our countries. We are approaching this date with substantive positive experience of cooperation and serious coordination towards further expansion" [3].

Bilateral trade between Russia and Malaysia grew by 12.9% in 2025, reflecting ongoing economic engagement between the two nations [3, 1, 2]. Russia values cooperation in education, science, technology, tourism, and humanitarian spheres with Malaysia, maintaining regular contacts through ministries, agencies, and parliamentary coordination via an intergovernmental commission overseeing projects in these fields [3, 1, 2].

Putin described Malaysia as a "long-standing partner based on mutual respect and consideration of each other's interests" [3, 1, 2]. He praised Malaysia’s role in ASEAN, noting that the first summit-level Russia-ASEAN meeting was held in Malaysia in 2005. He added, "Last year, your country chaired ASEAN and we welcome that Malaysia maintains and supports the development of the first strategic partnership between Russia and ASEAN" [1].

Putin also asked that his best wishes be conveyed to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, through Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim [3, 1, 2].

Russia and Malaysia continue to coordinate efforts to expand cooperation across economic, scientific, technical, and cultural projects through an active intergovernmental commission [3, 1, 2]. The next major milestone will be the 60th anniversary celebration of diplomatic relations in 2027 [3, 1, 2].
