Israeli forces intercepted and boarded 22 vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla 2.0 humanitarian mission in international waters on April 30, detaining 10 Malaysians aboard six ships, officials confirmed [1].
The detained Malaysians were spread across the ships Arkham III, Eros 1, Bianca BCN, Freia, Marea, and Esplai II, with the names of those held verified by the Singapore National Coordination Committee (SNCC) [1].
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim condemned the interception as a violation of maritime law and likened it to piracy, describing the actions as unacceptable [1]. He said Malaysia is collaborating with partner countries to ensure the immediate release and safe return of the detained citizens.
Anwar emphasized the need for compassion and humanity in dealing with the detainees. "Malaysia urges all parties to act immediately and ensure no harm comes to any of the activists, including the 10 Malaysians who are currently detained and out of contact. Their safety must be guaranteed without compromise," he said [1].
He added, "We place our trust in Allah SWT, alongside comprehensive efforts now underway, and pray that all involved remain safe. The prayers of all Malaysians are with the Global Sumud Flotilla."
The Global Sumud Flotilla 2.0 mission aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. The Israeli interception took place in international waters, intensifying tensions around freedom of navigation in the region [1].
Malaysia continues diplomatic efforts with allied nations to secure the detainees’ safe release and repatriation.
