Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said he will meet Taiping Zoo and Night Safari soon to discuss the fate of 3 elephants, Dara, Amoi and Kelat, now at Tennoji Zoo in Japan. [1]
Wan Rosdy said the meeting will seek clarification and look at steps to bring the elephants back to Malaysia, citing concern over their welfare in Japan. He said, "I, along with the Taiping Zoo authorities, will hold a discussion and meeting in the near future, even earlier than the meeting planned by the Perak state government." [1]
He said public concern supports the effort and that public voice can influence the decision. Wan Rosdy had earlier urged that the elephants be brought back and placed at the Kuala Gandah National Elephant Conservation Centre in Temerloh. [1]
Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup said the elephants should return to Malaysia if the current agreement no longer fits conservation principles, wildlife welfare and current sensitivities. [1]
Perak Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching said a stakeholder meeting will be held this week to discuss the relocation issue. Wan Rosdy said, "We are worried that something will happen to the elephants... we are working on bringing them back to Malaysia and we hope the people will support this effort because the voice of the people can influence a decision."
