Low Kean Peng, 35, pleaded not guilty at Klang Magistrate's Court to charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing serious injury to p-hailing delivery rider Zulfiqar Zamir Amirul Nizam, 27. The crash occurred at about 12:35 a.m. on May 13 along Persiaran Kota in Klang [1, 2, 3, 4].

Low's blood alcohol content was measured at 196 mg per 100 ml of blood. Sources vary on the legal limit, with some stating it as 50 mg per 100 ml and another source listing 146 mg per 100 ml. Regardless, Low's level exceeded both limits reported [1, 2, 3, 4].

He faces charges under Section 44(1A) of the Road Transport Act. If convicted, Low could face imprisonment of seven to 10 years, a fine ranging between RM30,000 and RM50,000, and driving licence suspension of at least seven years according to some sources [1, 2, 3, 4].

At the hearing on May 18, bail was initially opposed by prosecution but was granted by the magistrate for RM10,000 with one surety. The court ordered Low's driving licence to be suspended and required him to report to the police station twice a month until the case concludes [2, 3, 4].

Low told the court, "I do not plead guilty. I want to go on trial, Puan" [1]. His defence lawyer, Ethan W.H. Tan, said, "My client will cooperate fully with the court and attend all future proceedings. The court may also impose additional conditions, such as requiring him to report to the police station. He is not a flight risk and this is the first time he has been brought to court" [2].

Low is either unemployed or works part-time as a freelance event planning assistant earning about RM1,800 to RM2,000 monthly. He is the sole caregiver for his elderly parents [2, 3, 4].

The victim’s family and fiancée were present at the court session [1, 2, 3, 4]. The next court mention for Low’s case is set for July 30 [2, 3, 4].
