A 63-year-old Malaysian woman was arrested by Nigerian authorities on May 17 at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos for allegedly trying to smuggle 31 kilograms of Canadian Loud cannabis into the country [1, 2, 3].

She arrived in Nigeria on a flight from Thailand via Dubai, UAE. Investigations indicate she traveled from Malaysia to Thailand before boarding the flight to Nigeria with two large suitcases containing the drugs [4, 1, 2, 3].

During interrogation, the woman claimed the trip and drug delivery were sponsored by her daughter. She also said she stayed around two weeks in Thailand before receiving the cannabis [1, 2, 3].

The Malaysian police Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) is cooperating with Nigerian and Thai authorities to probe the case and locate the woman’s daughter [4, 1, 2, 3]. NCID director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said, "Efforts to locate the woman’s daughter are still underway, and the allegation that she was set up by her daughter is also being investigated." [3]

Malaysian police are examining whether the woman was used as a pawn in a larger drug trafficking operation involving her daughter [3].
