The Kuala Lumpur High Court raised the jail sentence of 67-year-old Leong Kuen from 10 months to one year on May 4. The court ruled the lower court had sentenced him below the minimum required under Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief [1].
Leong was convicted of vandalising five ATM screens at a bank in Jinjang Selatan on February 17. The incident caused reported losses of RM43,271 [1]. Justice Azhar Abdul Hamid noted, "The minimum sentence for (the offence) under Section 427 of the Penal Code (committing mischief) is one year. But the magistrate gave you a 10-month sentence last month," [1].
The court ordered that the one-year sentence run from the date of Leong's arrest on February 18, 2026 [1]. Leong had earlier claimed trial to damaging the five ATM screens last month [1].
Leong is also facing separate vandalism charges related to ATM screens at other banks between February 16 and 17, according to reports [1]. The next step will be the continuation of proceedings regarding these additional charges.
