Kelantan police said on Tuesday they have opened an investigation into false online claims about the killing of 19-year-old college student Nurfisya Zulkifly in Ketereh, after posts spread speculation about suspects and used police images and the PDRM logo without permission. [1]

The case involves a female student found with 61 stab wounds, police said, after her body was discovered in Ketereh at about 12.30am last Friday. [1]

Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the force was treating the online posts seriously. "We are taking this matter very seriously due to the circulation of social media posts containing various unverified information and facts regarding the case," he said. [1]

Police said the false content included claims about the backgrounds of suspects and a viral allegation that the father of a teenage male suspect was a retired police officer with influential links. Kota Bharu district police said that was untrue and said the suspect's father is a retiree from another government agency. Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azmir Damiri said, "What has gone viral claiming that he is a retired police officer and that there is a 'big connection' is completely untrue." [1]

Police said the case is being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. They said a report has been lodged and inquiries are ongoing, while Mohd Yusoff urged the public not to spread false information on social media. "As such, the public is advised to be more responsible when using social media and not to spread false information," he said. [1]
