Two brothers, Muhammad Amir Ashraf Mohd Zul-Zunaidi, 15, and Muhammad Aidil Amsyar Mohd Zul-Zunaidi, 14, drowned while swimming in Sungai Beril near Taman Beril, Paka, Terengganu on May 24, 2026. The incident occurred around 10:56 to 11:00 a.m. when strong currents swept them away as they swam with two friends, Muhammad Afi Naashif Adli Noone (15) and Muhammad Farish Iqbal Cik Mohanarunasdi (14), who managed to swim to safety [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].
Muhammad Afi Naashif Adli Noone recalled, "They were both struggling and drowning, and calling for help after jumping from the wooden jetty for the second time." He described how Aidil panicked and unintentionally pulled a friend underwater before both brothers were swept away by the current [1, 4].
Rescue operations involved 37 personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department, police, villagers, and divers from Chukai Fire and Rescue tasked with water rescue [3, 5]. Muhammad Amir Ashraf's body was recovered on the same day at 3:47 p.m., found at a depth of 5.1 metres about 7 metres from the incident site. Police confirmed the body was sent for post-mortem [1, 2, 5, 6, 7].

The two brothers were students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Durian Guling in Marang, Terengganu, and had never swum at Sungai Beril before. They invited their two friends to bathe with them before they returned to Kelantan for Raya celebrations [1, 2, 4, 5, 6].
The brothers were laid to rest in their hometown of Melor, Kota Bharu, Kelantan — Muhammad Aidil Amsyar on the evening of May 25 and Muhammad Amir Ashraf on the morning of May 26 [7].
